LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Just because Tennessee and Maryland haven’t met much doesn’t mean the schools aren’t familiar with each other’s success.
In Sunday’s Louisville Regional semifinal, the top-seeded Lady Vols are making sure they keep a close watch on Alyssa Thomas while the fourth-seeded Terrapins try to keep Meighan Simmons within reach.
The matchup between the Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conference players of the year respectively adds to what could shape up as this regional’s marquee matchup. Tennessee (29-5) and Maryland (26-6) have combined for nine national championships and are looking to return to the Final Four for the first time in several years.
The schools’ first meeting since 2005 also marks their first NCAA tournament matchup since the 1989 Final Four, when the Vols won en route to their second of eight titles.
