Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
Media Figures Not the Same?
A new poll shows that only a quarter of Americans believe the White House is fully cooperating with the investigation into who leaked the name of CIA agent Valerie Plame (search). But the public seems less disapproving of media figures that are not cooperating.
In the case of New York Times reporter Judith Miller (search), who is in an Alexandria, Virginia, jail for refusing to reveal her source, 60 percent say she did the right thing.
No Question of its ‘Authenticity’?
Shortly after reading from an FBI agent’s account of Guantanamo Bay (search) prison and comparing prisoner treatment to that of Nazis, Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin insisted there “[isn’t] any question of [the account’s] authenticity” since it had been around for nearly a year and hadn’t been challenged. Well, now it has.
Military investigators have been unable to substantiate the allegations, saying in a report last week, “we were unable to find any documentation, testimony, or other evidence corroborating the … agent’s recollection.”
Reporter Shall Remain
The British left-wing newspaper The Guardian (search) is acknowledging that one of its reporters belongs to a radical Islamist group banned in parts of Europe and Asia, but it’s refusing to fire him.
The Guardian says that while Dilpazier Aslam (search), who’s been reporting on the London bombings from Leeds, is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir (search), the organization which has been accused of funding terrorist operations in Central Asia, and banned in Germany for anti-Israeli propaganda, is legal in Britain. But, The Guardian tells The Independent newspaper, “we are keeping the matter under review.”
Fresno Girl Committed Felony Assault?
An 11-year-old girl in Fresno, California, is being charged with felony assault, after police sent three squad cars and a helicopter in response to a 911 call. The girl was read her rights, handcuffed, and taken to juvenile hall. She has since been placed under house arrest for 30 days. The Fresno police say it “took the actions that were necessary.”
So what exactly did the 11-year-old girl do? Why, she threw a rock at a group of boys who were pelting her with water balloons, hitting one boy. She says it was self-defense.
