GLENEAGLES, Scotland – Ian Poulter is being linked to Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie, two players with whom he would appear to have little in common.
Ballesteros is a five-time major champion whose passion sparked growth in golf across Europe. Montgomerie is an eight-time winner of the European Tour money list.
Poulter has done neither.
But this isn’t just golf. It’s about the Ryder Cup.
Poulter already has won seven straight matches, including all four last year to spark Europe to a comeback victory. For the first time, Poulter is looked upon as the main European the Americans would love to beat.
He hasn’t won a tournament in nearly two years. But Justin Rose says Poulter only needs a spark that the Ryder Cup provides.
